My name is [Insert Name] and I am partaking in The Study Period campaign by the Student Center for Diversity Advocacy and Inclusion (SCDAI) to advocate for fair and equitable access to education by providing free menstrual products in all (higher) education institutions in the Netherlands. I am sending this email because I believe our institution should implement sustainable practices to tackle period poverty.
Period poverty affects people who menstruate all over the world and the Netherlands is no exception. A study by Plan International has shown that around 9% of Dutch girls and women between the ages of 12 and 25 only sometimes have enough money for sanitary products like pads or tampons. Thus, the equitable thing to do is to ensure that students can menstruate for free at school.
Therefore when looking at period poverty from the education lens, sanitary products, and hygienic facilities should be treated as a basic necessity. People who menstruate shouldn't have to skip school because they can't afford menstrual products, they shouldn't have to leave class because there are no available menstrual products at their education institution and they shouldn’t have to use unhygienic alternatives due to their finances.
Just like toilet paper and water, menstrual products should be an investment that higher education institutions make to allow students to tend to their basic hygiene necessities during the hours students spend there.
I call on our university to take action to tackle period poverty. People who menstruate deserve to experience their menstruation without any stress despite their financial situation.

The Study Period is a campaign organized by the Student Center for Diversity Advocacy and Inclusion to advocate for a sustainable action plan to end period poverty in the Netherlands, focusing on higher education. Geachte heer/ mevrouw,
Mijn naam is [Naam invullen] en ik doe mee aan de Study Period-campagne van het Student Center for Diversity Advocacy and Inclusion (SCDAI) om te pleiten voor rechtvaardige en gelijke toegang tot onderwijs door gratis menstruatieproducten aan te bieden in alle instellingen voor (hoger) onderwijs in Nederland. Ik stuur deze e-mail omdat ik vind dat onze instelling duurzame praktijken moet implementeren om menstruatie-armoede aan te pakken.
Menstruatie-armoede treft mensen die menstrueren over de hele wereld en dit is geen uitzondering in Nederland. Uit onderzoek van Plan International blijkt dat zo'n 9% van de Nederlandse meisjes en vrouwen tussen de 12 en 25 jaar niet altijd genoeg geld heeft voor sanitaire producten zoals maandverband of tampons. Daarom is het gelijkwaardig om ervoor te zorgen dat leerlingen gratis kunnen menstrueren op school.
Daardoor, als we menstruatie-armoede bekijken vanuit de onderwijs-lens, zijn sanitaire producten een hygiënische voorzieningen en een basisbehoefte. Mensen die menstrueren zouden niet moeten spijbelen omdat ze geen menstruatieproducten kunnen betalen, ze zouden de klas niet moeten hoeven verlaten omdat er geen menstruatieproducten beschikbaar zijn in hun onderwijsinstelling en ze zouden geen onhygiënische alternatieven moeten hoeven gebruiken vanwege hun financiën.
Net als toiletpapier en water, zouden menstruatieproducten een investering zijn voor hoger onderwijs instellingen om ervoor te zorgen dat studenten hun basisbehoeften kunnen voorzien tijdens de uren die studenten daar doorbrengen.
Ik roep onze universiteit op om actie te ondernemen om menstruatie-armoede aan te pakken. Mensen die menstrueren dienen gelijkwaardige kansen te hebben om hun menstruatie zonder stress te ervaren niettegenstaande hun financiële situatie.

De Study Period is een campagne georganiseerd door de Student Center for Diversity Advocacy and Inclusion om te pleiten voor een duurzaam actieplan om menstruatie-armoede in Nederland te beëindigen, gericht op het hoger onderwijs. Onderdeel van de campagne is een e-mailsjabloon waarin studenten uit heel Nederland kunnen pleiten dat hun instelling duurzame veranderingen doorvoeren om een einde te maken aan menstruatie-armoede.
